Crop Health Monitoring and Yield Forecast

The Challenge; Sugarcane is a high-investment, long-duration crop that is sensitive to water stress, nutrient deficiencies, and outbreaks of pests or disease — all of which can significantly reduce yield and affect sugar recovery.

The Solution?

Growing Cane on a new Farm

The challenge; At times, new areas may be added to your farm. These areas might have been used to grow sugarcane for years or other crops. The farmers working on these fields may join your organisation or may have moved elsewhere. Regardless, you now have the responsibility to grow sugarcane but lack experience farming these specific fields.

The Solution?

Sugarcane out-grower management

The challenge; For sugar mills that rely on outgrower networks for raw material supply, securing consistent volume and quality of cane remains a persistent challenge. Mills lack timely, accurate visibility into outgrower field conditions, making it difficult to plan harvesting, to prevent poaching, and to deliver effective agronomic support.

The Solution?

In the field with SmartCane: How satellite images help farmers get the most out of their sugarcane

During my visit to a 700-hectare sugarcane plantation in Kenya, I experienced firsthand how crucial good information is for successful crop management. On a property that size, inspecting every field every day is simply not possible. But as a farmer, you still need to know where the issues are and that’s where SmartCane comes in...

Research Internship: Outgrower cane farming in Uganda

Posted: 18 November 2025

Background and Scope
SmartCane is an agricultural technology company supporting sugarcane farmers across East and Southern Africa. We work to improve farm productivity, strengthen value chains, and build evidence-based solutions that help growers and mills operate more efficiently and sustainably.

We are seeking a motivated research intern to support a field study on the challenges faced by outgrower sugarcane farmers in Uganda. The intern will travel to Uganda and work closely with local stakeholders to document farming constraints, market dynamics, service gaps, and opportunities for improvement. The work will contribute directly to SmartCane’s program design and farmer support strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field interviews and observations with outgrower farmers and mill representatives

  • Analyse production, service, and market challenges affecting smallholder sugarcane growers

  • Compile findings into concise research notes, presentations, and recommendations

  • Collaborate with SmartCane’s regional team and contribute to ongoing knowledge development

Profile (Indicative)
We encourage applications from students with backgrounds in:

  • Agriculture, anthropology, rural development, environmental or social sciences

  • Economics, value chain studies, or development studies

  • Field research, data collection, or qualitative interviewing

Academic level: Bachelor (final-year) or MSc.

Applicants should be comfortable with independent travel and working in rural environments.

This internship offers hands-on exposure to agricultural development in East Africa and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, impact-oriented work. A monthly stipend is provided.
